CURRICULUM
What are we learning in third grade?
Third grade is a pivotal year in elementary school, with tons of new learning going on! Third graders become more advanced readers, writers, mathematicians and researchers, investigating and analyzing what they learn. Read more about our units of study below. You'll be amazed by the progress of your student!

ReadingThird grade is typically seen as the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Through the Lucy Calkins curriculum, students will utilize reading strategies to better comprehend both informational and literary text. These strategies include making inferences and predictions, identifying purpose, drawing conclusions, comparing and contrasting, and determining importance. With these skills, third graders will participate in novel studies and engage in thought-provoking conversation across multiple subject areas.

WritingWriting is an exciting time in third grade! Students will engage in opinion, information, and narrative writing projects throughout the school year. Third graders regularly use resources like books and technology to research their writing topics and develop composed, informative pieces. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are also major areas of study!

MathHere at Cottonwood Creek, we utilize the
Bridges in Mathematics curriculum. Within the program, third graders learn more about place value relationships and adding and subtracting fluently within 1000. Students also learn and use multiplication and division within 100, develop an understanding of fractions as numbers, and harness key geometric skills. |
Science & S.S.Throughout the year, we switch back and forth between science and social studies. Our science units include: Matter and Energy, Life Structures, and Rocks and Minerals. In social studies, third graders study the five regions of the United States, practice their map reading skills, and learn more about trade economy and government.
