Mindfulness: What is it? Why are we doing it?
In recent years, Mindfulness has become a trending topic and practice amongst everyone from high-ranking business professionals to preschoolers in their classrooms. There are countless books and even apps on the subject. With its increasing popularity, many people are asking… What is mindfulness?
In simple terms, mindfulness is “the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” The concept isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but in today’s world, where teenagers have been deemed the most stressed-out age group in our society, it’s become more and more necessary.

Why should we practice mindfulness in third grade? A central goal to practicing mindfulness is developing a sense of self-awareness. Particularly, how to make good decisions, think clearly, and be positive. Third grade is a big transition year, with higher expectations and a drive toward independence. With these tools in their toolboxes, students will develop greater problem-solving skills and be able to recognize feelings of calm vs. unrest.
In our classroom, we will begin practicing mindfulness at the start of the school year. We won’t necessarily be taking out our yoga mats and meditating, but we will utilize a couple minutes each day to practice being present. Gratitude and kindness will be a central focus, with fun activities accompanying our learning. Stay tuned and be sure to check out the class blog to track our progress!
