It’s been an awesome week in third grade! This week, students did a fantastic job jumping back into their school routines and taking on challenges. In math this week, third graders reviewed attributes of quadrilaterals and area/perimeter questions. We also took some time to learn about the attributes and classifications of triangles, focusing on how important triangles are in architectural design and construction. In fact, students worked in groups to create their own structures composed of triangles. To test the success of their work, third graders stacked small weights on top of their buildings. Many toppled over, but the learning experience was still engaging and fun! In Reader’s Workshop, third graders prepared for the upcoming CMAS assessment by reviewing concepts like RACE responses, nonfiction text features, and using context clues. All students worked incredibly hard on their practice activities and are going into CMAS testing prepared to take on the challenge! Writer’s Workshop this week was focused on creative writing. Prior to Spring Break, third graders read a true story about three women who found themselves stranded in Death Valley. Students were amazed by their story of survival and were inspired to write tales of their own! Third graders were provided the prompt, “Imagine you have found yourself stranded in Death Valley. Write a journal entry about your experience thus far.” Students are doing a fabulous job writing detailed (and admittedly hilarious) entries. We’ll be sharing them next week! It’s been an awesome week in third grade! This week, students participated in Jump Rope for Heart and had a comfy pajama day, all while continuing to work hard in class! In math this week, third graders wrapped up our unit study of multiplication and division extensions. We are now moving on to… Geometry! In this unit, students will calculate area and perimeter, represent fractions as parts of a whole, and classify two-dimensional shapes. It is a fun, all-encompassing unit that third graders are eager to get started! Science this week was all about determining the difference between weathering and erosion. Third graders realized that weathering is the breaking down of rocks, whereas erosion is the movement of them. Third graders even read a Newsela article about the causes of erosion. In Reader’s Workshop, third graders participated in their first rotation of book club meetings. Currently, our class has four book clubs going and each is focused on having meaningful conversations about their reading. All books are works of fiction, which allow for ample inferences, character studies, and analysis of author’s purpose! In Writer's Workshop, students are wrapping up their endangered animal reports and creating web pages that include information on and pictures of their animals. Stay tuned for information on how to access your student's web page! Business:
